Research Suggests Link Between Inflammation and Mood Disorders

There are various kinds of mood disorders and many of them cause pain for their sufferers. Mood disorders can cause people to succumb to all kinds of bad decisions and even cause death.

A Danish study that investigated mood disorders discovered that they could be the brain’s response to inflammation in the body. The study published in the Psychiatry journal also provided further evidence to support the theory that inflammation is one of the major causes of mental health conditions.

Individuals who suffered from autoimmune disease were 45 per cent more likely to develop mood disorders according to researchers. Infections on the other hand are linked with a 62% increased risk of mood disorders.

Danish researchers found that 3% of the population comprising 91,637 individuals who were receiving treatment for a mood disorder were found to have a strong correlation between autoimmune disorders, infections and mood disorders. The database consisted of over 3.56 million individuals born between 1945 and 1996.

A study published in the Journal of Neuron in 2011 also revealed that high levels of quinolinic acid, a byproduct of inflammation is linked with chronic depression and suicidal tendencies.
