Two of the Worst!
Two of the worst conditions that people fear are Alzheimer’s and Blindness (including Macular Degeneration). Even just thinking about these conditions can make people feel anxious when I have discussed the conditions with them. I conclude that the reason for this is a loss or fear of losing control over their lives.
This fear is one of the greatest emotional distresses for all humans and in fact animals can suffer from it as well. It has also been studied in great length for thousands of years since doctors in Ancient Greece first wrote about it.
You can test or at least imagine this loss of control by putting a blindfold or eye mask on in a strange room or public place (with friends to keep you safe but not speaking to you) and try to walk around for 5 minutes without asking for help.
Alternatively, imagine waking up in a foreign country where no one spoke your language and you had lost your memory and everyone was talking or shouting at you but you did not know what they were saying, who you were or where you were? I don’t know about you but just typing these words gives me the creeps and creates anxiety.
To remind you, I am in my 70th year and I will be 70 in a few months (January) and no one knows better than me the statistics (blindness in the form of Macular Degeneration and Alzheimer’s are growing epidemics and 25% of this age group are at great risk). What I do know is that both are preventable and reversible.
Alzheimer’s and most eye diseases have the same basic causes although infection is also an additional factor in Alzheimer’s. Studies are clear that those that do NOT eat high starchy carb/high sugar diets, that DO eat a high fatty diet and DO eat a high green vegetable diet have little or none of these diseases (or any other) as they age. Exercise and other healthy lifestyle activities are also protective factors.
