Alarming new research suggests that chemotherapy may cause the spread of breast cancer. According to a recent report in The Daily Mail, prescribed chemo drugs such as Paclitaxel and Doxorubicin cause breast cancer tumours to release proteins that circulate in the blood until they reach the lungs, triggering the onset of the disease in a new part of the body. When scientists blocked this protein, cancer did not spread.
The study by the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research working with both experimental tumour models, used Paclitaxel (commonly known under the brand name Taxol) and Doxorubicin (Adriamycin). Researchers found they cause breast cancer tumours to release small fluid-filled sacs called exosomes. The chemotherapy makes the exosomes containing the protein annexin-A6, which is not found in sacs released from untreated tumors.
Author of the study and postdoctoral researcher Professor Ioanna Keklikoglou said, “‘It seems that loading of annexin-A6 into exosomes is significantly enhanced in response to chemotherapy,”. When the exosome are released from tumors, they circulate in the blood until they reach the lungs. They then give out annexin-A6, stimulating lung cells to release another protein called CCL2. This then attracts immune cells called monocytes, that fight certain infections and help other cells to remove dead or damaged tissue.
Myocytes can be dangerous however, as previous studies show they fuel the survival and growth of cancerous cells in the lungs. This study, therefore, identifies a new link between chemotherapy and breast cancer metastasis. When the annexin-A6 was neturalised it blocked the monocytes, and the experimental breast tumour no longer spread to the lungs. Researchers hope this will improve the effectiveness of neoadjuvant therapy.
