There have been numerous studies into curcumin’s clinical benefits and its ability to protect against diseases like cancer and diabetes. Last week, a study by researchers in India analysed the antimicrobial activity of curcumin and its effectivity against bacteria, viruses and fungi.
Curcumin is derived from the Indian spice turmeric and contains antioxidant properties. It’s thought to have a range of anti-inflammatory benefits and can protect against various health conditions. Curcumin works to do this by killing the bacteria due to its anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.
Curcumin’s Potent Antibacterial Properties
In the study, curcumin was added to a growing stock of bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results indicated that the curcumin killed all of the bacteria within two hours. More importantly, only a few micrograms were needed to achieve this.
Researchers analysed how the molecules killed this bacteria and identified a number of techniques to determine how this was happening. When analysed under the microscope, curcumin was shown to have weakened the outside shell of the bacteria, i.e. the membrane.
The curcumin had created structural changes to the bacteria’s membrane, having damaged it by adding holes in their otherwise intact exterior. By using coloured dyes, it was determined that flooding from the outside had occurred. The bacterium depends on maintaining a different environment on the inside and out.
The results of the study indicated that for curcumin it doesn’t matter which species of bacteria were involved, the results were the same. The molecule has the same mechanism of action and the ability to kill bacterium.
Curcumin and The Future
This is just one of the many promising studies that indicates the effective anti-inflammatory properties of curcumin and its potential use within already available antibiotics. All of this shows curcumin’s powerful ability to heal wounds and highlights the important role it could be play in what could soon be coming, in a post-antibiotic era.
Taking curcumin on a daily basis is most beneficial for your overall health and protecting your body against various forms of bacteria.
Curcuminx4000™ is a supplement that contains 600mg of Meriva® curcuma longa extract in a daily dose of 3 capsules and is the most efficient way to get curcumin absorbed into your bloodstream. By being bound to fat, it increases the bioavailability of the curcumin up to 40x compared to ordinary curcumin so that it’s more readily absorbed within the body. Taking the capsules around 3 times per day on a daily basis is suggested for best results.
