Health News (Week 8 – 2014)
By Robert Redfern
I have written on this subject many times before but still I get asked questions on a daily basis about it, so I am revisiting and updating my previous comments just to be very clear.
Iodine – You Need this!
Everyone (children, men, and women) of all ages need to take an organic iodine supplement every day for the rest of their healthy lives. You also need selenium -another important mineral that acts as a co-factor to iodine.
WHO (The World Health Organization) before it became another tool of ‘Big Pharma’ stated that all women with child-bearing ability needed to supplement with iodine to ensure a healthy child.
Women will always require higher doses of iodine than men.
Why? It’s because breast tissue requires more organic iodine than even the thyroid (which is the critical reason to still take iodine if you are on drugs for the thyroid). It is why fibrocystic (and other critical breast diseases) respond so well to iodine supplementation. I know doctors tell you not to take iodine or eat seaweed but they are plain wrong. If you have not had your thyroid destroyed by medical intervention then iodine and other steps will recover your thyroid. This deficiency in females is also the cause of the epidemic of fibroids, Ovarian Cysts, including Polycystic Ovaries being reported all over the world.
Of course men and children need to take it as well, as a preventative for all of the many diseases that can be linked to a deficiency.
What is Iodine?
Iodine is one of the basic essential minerals that are an integral and essential part of healthy DNA integrity (both developmentally and throughout life), immunity, metabolic balance, endocrine function and cardiovascular health. Along with the breasts and thyroid, it is also in all your cells and other areas of the body such as the salivary glands, cerebrospinal fluid, brain and the prostate (This is why it’s still important for men and children). Healthy levels of Iodine throughout the body are a major protective factor against immune incursions, environmental contaminants and planetary-based radiation pollution.
However, iodine in its basic mineral state is toxic and it has to be taken up by a plant that then converts it to organic iodine.
Why do I need supplementation?
There is simply not enough organic iodine in the food chain any more. It is a very tiny amount we need (3.6mg per day) but over-farming and natural depletion has taken this away.
You may have been told to drink cow’s milk to get a little extra iodine but other studies indicate that milk can cause breast cancer (Google this for more info).
One hundred years ago doctors suggested adding 150mcg of an unnatural form of iodine called potassium iodide to processed salt (sodium with all of the other minerals including iodine taken out). This is what is normally found in supplements on the shelf and also in animal feed supplements. This is now known to cause a completely new set of problems without solving organic iodine deficiency.
THE IODINE OPTIONS…
What is Organic Iodine?
The basic element iodine is a mineral in the soil. This is predigested by yeast in healthy soil and converted into a mineral salt. Plant roots take this up and then convert it to a non-toxic atomic element, also known as a colloidal mineral and its more accurate name, organic mineral. All minerals that are found in plants are organic minerals and are 100% non-toxic in any quantity.
What is Atomic Iodine?
Using high voltage electricity it is possible to create atomic iodine (also called Nascent Iodine) where the particle size and electrical charge are as close to that of the organic minerals as is possible.
Can I simply take Iodine tablets?
As I said before most iodine supplements are usually Potassium Iodide and a small amount of this may be absorbed but there are other problems and some believe it can damage the thyroid.
These other problems include iodine being fairly easily displaced from the body by chemical toxins in the environment called halides: fluoride, bromine and chloride. Fluoride is by far the worst culprit. Deliberately included in some toothpaste and in your water supply, every time you take a shower, brush your teeth or drink from the tap, your body gets a little exposure to fluoride, leeching out good iodine.
There are kelp tablets on sale which contain Organic Iodine but you would need to take 15 to 20 per day or more to get the 3.6mg you need. Or 2 cups of Kelp or Kombu seaweed eaten daily would be needed to get the correct amount. NB: The cost of these are over 4x more expensive than taking Nascent Iodine Drops.
How do we know we are deficient?
The downward spiral in your health is slight at first, almost unnoticeable. Your thyroid is a good indicator and the first things you notice are that your vitality isn’t what it used to be – your get up and go seems to have got up and left.
- You tire more easily, but you sleep less deeply.
- You gain weight. Sometimes you just look at a junk food and it goes straight to your hips!
- Chalking it up to a busy lifestyle and poor eating habits, you probably ignore it, possibly for years. But the changes in your body go on and on.
What kind of changes?
There are over two dozen major symptoms and signs associated with an under active thyroid. Here are just a few of the more common ones:
Sources:
- Weight gain
- Low energy fatigue
- Ice cold hands or feet
- Dry skin
- Hair loss (alopecia)
- Brain fog
- Insomnia, poor sleep
- Tingling in the hands and feet
- Muscle pain
- Edema (swelling in ankles)
- Elevated cholesterol
All of these are due to an under active thyroid, and definitely not to “clinical depression” as so many of you are led to believe.
Iodine supplementation alone can help most people. Some may notice a difference in just a couple of hours and for others it may take a few weeks. Get started and find out for yourself the health benefits of Iodine.
If you are still in any doubt about which Iodine is best for you, it is Nascent Iodine.
This is the Iodine that we take and I take some drops 3 times daily; this delivers all the iodine that I need. Without turning this into a chemistry lesson, the reason I take it is because the body recognizes Nascent Iodine as the iodine naturally utilized by the thyroid and it is easily absorbed and safe. One bottle lasts for around 2 to 3 months. If you have serious health challenges then it may be that you need to take as much as 50-60 drops per day until recovered.

P.S. Here is a quote from Nobel Laureate Albert Szent Gyorgyi, the physician who discovered Vitamin C:
“When I was a medical student, iodine in the form of K1 was the universal medicine. Nobody knew what it did but it did something good.”
I used nascent 2% iodine – 8 drops in water, first day; working up 1 drop per day to 13 drops – and stopped because I began to feel “jittery” and hyper” and it seemed that my metabolism was being excited and high.
I have had a mild heart attack and the cardio inserted one stent in the left corollary artery. I became fearful of continuing the iodine therapy any longer. I will tell you my reason for using iodine was because I sensed that I had prostate cancer (pelvic pain, blood in urine, enlarged prostate hyperplasia – 25..4). After the first two days of iodine therapy, the pain subsided and was no more, and the blood in the urine disappeared. No recurrence of these two symptoms of prostate cancer, although my enlarged prostate persists, my urine stream is sometimes fairly strong, sometimes kind of weak. Still arise two to three times overnight for urination relief.
I don’t know now whether to resume iodine therapy. My doctor (VA Med Ctr) would probably disapprove.
Wallace,
Everyone needs iodine and no doctor will deny this. It is how much you need. Try 1 drop x 3 times per day and then build up to 3 x 3.
Robert
Thanks for your prompt response, Robert. I will try what you’ve suggested and see whether I can experience increased energy, as before, but without all the jitteriness. Then I’ll send you an update on how I react. Perhaps I did start out before at too high a dosage. Also, next visit to the VA Med Ctr I will request thyroid tests to see where T3 and T4 are at this point. Thanks again.
Wallace, Dont waste your time. The medical thyroid test is not really useful and is really a test whether they can get you one drugs.
The morning temp test before you get out of bed is accurate.
