Foods such as cherries, ginger and curcumin derived from turmeric could help to reduce inflammation according to researchers. Inflammation is the main cause of many diseases, especially arthritis which is thought to affect around 10 million people in the UK alone. When the cartilage between the bone begins to erode, this causes the joints to rub and can lead to painful inflammation in the hands, hips, knees and spine.
One handful of Brazil nuts contain enough selenium to boost your immunity and slow arthritis progression by fighting the inflammation. While one weekly portion of oily fish is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like sardines, that could halve the risk of rheumatoid arthritis developing. Meanwhile cherries are rich in antioxidants known as anthocyanins and these also have anti-inflammatory properties.
Ginger and turmeric can also have anti-inflammatory effects as it contains the curcumin extract which is known as a potent antioxidant. Broccoli also contains the naturally occurring chemical sulforaphane and this can prevent or slow osteoarthritis progression.
The study is from a poll that suggests over a third of over-50s want to diet within the New Year. While the foods won’t necessarily cure arthritis, it’s possible to ease many of the symptoms by choosing to eat these healthy foods on a daily basis.
