Alkaline bodies are known to be healthier in many cases, as opposed to acidic bodies. While what we eat can have a big impact on our overall health, do we ever stop and think about if a food is acidic or alkaline? Many people simply aren’t aware about their food choices and how if they decide to go for more acidic or alkaline options, this can make the difference between enjoying good health or serious illness.

In school we learn about what the pH balance means on a scale from 0 to 14 with a pH level of 7 being considered as “neutral” and the lower end of the scale representing acidity. When the pH level is closer to 14, then it has higher alkaline properties. A pH of 7.35 is considered healthy and is recommended for what we should be aiming for and this is considered to be alkaline on the spectrum.

Modern diets tend to consist of highly acidic foods that when consumed on a regular basis and combined with a stressful lifestyle, can contribute towards health problems in the body. These health problems include cancer, digestive problems and fatigue amongst other issues. Thankfully it is easy to fix many of these health concerns by implementing a few simple dietary and lifestyle changes that can make a big difference in the long term to improving your overall level of general health. Below are some key tips to stay healthy and keep your pH levels in balance…

  1. Change Your Diet. Avoiding certain acidic forming foods such as alcohol, meat, processed junk and sugar along with caffeinated products can all contribute to higher acidic levels. Choosing to eat more organic, leafy greens and dark skinned fruits is best for good health. While these foods don’t have to be eliminated completely, they should be limited to avoid making the body too acidic. Balance is key so for every acidic food eaten, aim to eat two or three alkaline foods alongside them.
  2. Include Coconut Oil. Along with Flax Oil, Coconut Oil contains saturated fats such as lauric acid that can kill bacteria and fungi. The lauric acid can invade the cell wall and destroy it. Coconut Oil also has excellent antibacterial and anti-microbial properties that can support the cleansing and healing process.
  3. Eat plenty of green vegetables, specifically spinach, kale, lettuce, cabbage, asparagus, broccoli, brussels sprouts and celery. The more green the vegetable is, the more rich it is in chlorophyll (the green pigment that converts the sunlight into food). These foods are excellent for increasing the alkalinity of the body.
  4. Eat many other colourful vegetables as they contain many vital nutrients for good health. Consider adding plenty of beets, onions, radishes, tomatoes and sweet potatoes into the diet.
  5. Eat more fruits and seeds. Pumpkin seeds and flax seeds are rich in nutrients such as copper, magnesium, manganese, protein and zinc. These plant compounds also contain phytosterols and antioxidants that can provide protection against the damage caused by free-radicals.
  6. Eat legumes and avoid grains. Removing wheat from the diet is recommended as wheat can be inflammatory. Wheat is inflammatory as it contains gluten and various gliadins that can occur in people with celiac disease. Eating more legumes such as black beans, buckwheat, chickpeas, mung beans and red lentils are better options as they are rich in nutrients along with fiber, iron and protein, while being low in saturated fat.

Along with following the above advice, remember to drink plenty of filtered water (around 8 , 8 ounce glasses throughout the day) to stay hydrated. Combine this with regular exercise, deep breathing and getting enough rest and sunlight for best results and to stay healthy in the long term.
