Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the most common causes of blindness that can gradually destroy a person’s central vision. Researchers now state that with the revolutionary use of stem cell therapy, they have been able to reverse its effects on at least two different patients.
This was achieved by implanting a “patch” of stem cells, over damaged areas at the back of the eyes. As a result, patients weren’t only able to read again but also saw faces that just used to be blurry images on fuzzy backgrounds. This solution was crafted at the London Project to Cure Blindness, a collaboration between experts from the University College London (UCL) and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
The improvement in vision was measured by way of lines on a reading chart. This proved a lot better than expected. Pete Coffey, a professor at UCL, said this about the experiment; “We said we’d get three [out of the proposed 10] patients with vision recovery of three lines. They probably wouldn’t get reading vision back. The first patient has got six lines improvement, which is astounding, and the second has five lines and he seems to be getting better as the months go by.”
This is interesting as both patients are really reading. “At best, the woman can read about one word a minute with magnification. She is now reading 80 words a minute and [the man] is reading 50,” Coffey said.
“Wet” AMD is caused by a sudden leakage from blood vessels in the eye. This ends up destroying the macula, a key component of the retina. Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) cells are found in the macula and play a highly important role in the functioning of the light sensitive photoreceptor cells in the eye. Cells then die without the necessary RPE support.
Based on the success of these trials, researchers are now looking to test their ‘cure’ on at least one patient to ensure it is safe. If all goes well, Coffey thinks that an off-the-shelf version of this treatment could be available within five years.
Why Wait? There’s Already A Natural Solution
Researchers use these studies to cite there ‘could be a cure’ available sometime in the near future. The truth is there is already a natural solution available.
Avoiding, preventing or even managing eye diseases such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is easy when you follow a dedicated eye health plan. This means taking the right nutrients to support good eye health.
Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids, a class of plant-derived vitamins that include beta-carotene. These are found in green leafy vegetables and are also present in the retina. Previous ARED (Age-Related Eye Disease) studies suggest that participants taking Lutein and Zeaxanthin were about “25% less likely to develop advanced AMD compared with participants with similar dietary intake”.
Taking Vitamin C also has powerful antioxidant benefits for eye health. Scientific evidence has suggested that Vitamin C can lower the risk for developing cataracts. Some of the risk factors for developing cataracts include smoking, diabetes and steroid use.
When a healthy lifestyle, the right nutrients and most importantly dedication to committing to the AMD health plan are taken into account – then good eye health is the natural result. Please see my ebook below for further details about how to naturally improve AMD. The ebook outlines a simple to follow plan that can prevent one of the leading causes of blindness.
