You may have heard a lot in the news lately about the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK being at a crisis point.

In particular, we were both shocked and saddened to hear the news story of Morwen Griffiths, a 90-year-old woman with suspected sepsis who was forced to spend three days sitting in a chair in A&E.

Morwen was driven to the hospital by her 27-year-old granddaughter Caryl Griffiths as there ‘weren’t any ambulances’. When taken straight to A&E, they were told there were no beds in her usual hospital in Aberystwyth, Wales, but there might be a chance of a bed in Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen, over an hour’s drive away.

Not only is this unacceptable in the 21st Century that people have to drive to A&E because there ‘are no ambulances’ only to find no hospital beds either, but it is also becoming ever more alarming as stories such as this are now normalised throughout the NHS.

While Ms Griffiths eventually got the help and medical support she needed to treat the sepsis – a potentially life-threatening reaction to an infection – many people in her situation do not, due to relying solely on an overstretched health service.

Giving Yourself a Good Health Lifeline

Our founder Robert Redfern was an advocate for people taking their health into their own hands where possible. While we are eternally grateful for the national health service and to doctors and nurses who dedicate their time to saving lives, achieving good health begins with us.

While it may be inevitable that, at some point, we need hospital care, by taking care of our health first, we can ensure that we are doing everything we can to stay healthy and avoid these potential risks.

Healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices have been shown to affect overall cause mortality profoundly. For best health, we recommend following a ketogenic and preferably plant-based diet as this reduces carbohydrates and sugars, the latter of which can spike insulin levels and contribute to inflammation – a significant factor in the onset of diseases.

Ensuring that your body gets the proper nutrients can also support your body’s healing process. In particular, we recommend the following nutrients as a substantial body of evidence supports their benefits.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and can strengthen your body’s natural defences. Studies show that Intravenous (IV) Vitamin C can also counter the deadly effects of sepsis (blood poisoning), which kills up to 60 per cent of sufferers. [1]

Research shows that Vitamin C can help reduce respiratory infections, and studies show that it can even kill cancer cells. [2,3]

Curcumin

As a naturally occurring compound derived from Indian spice turmeric, Curcumin is a powerful healing aid that can target inflammation anywhere in the body.

In particular, Curcumin can play a protective role in cell health, helping normal cells to live longer. [4] It can help to reduce joint pain, and studies show it can improve blood flow to the heart, regulating blood pressure. [5,6]

Curcumin has also been shown to improve brain function by boosting levels of the brain hormone BDNF, which can increase the growth of new neurons and may help to fight degenerative processes in the brain. [7]

Bicarbonate of Soda

Robert called Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda) “the penny cure” as studies show that it can decrease inflammation in the body, making it useful against a wide range of diseases.

This includes everything from autoimmune diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis to Lupus, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, irritable bowel disease (IBS) and Type 2 Diabetes.

When you are ill and go to the hospital, one of the first things they do is to place you on a drip of sodium bicarbonate. Studies also show that when baking soda is ingested, it can activate the body’s anti-inflammatory pathways. [8]

For best health, we recommend adding a pinch of Sodium Bicarbonate to each of your glasses of pure water daily, which helps to alkalise the body.
