Exercising for just 35 minutes daily can lower your risk of chronic disease. According to a new study by the American Cancer Society, even just a good walk every day can lower the risk of premature death.

Researchers examined the data of 140,000 people with an average age of 70 years old. Their findings suggest that people who regularly engaged in physical activity even if it was a minimal amount, were more likely to live longer, compared with those who were not physically active at all.

Walking in particular was suggested to reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. People walking for more than six hours a week also had a 35 per cent lower chance of dying from a respiratory disease. There was also a nine per cent lowered risk of early death due to cancer for those who walked – with a reduction of 20% for cardiovascular disease.

Walking is often described as the “perfect exercise” because most anyone is capable of doing it. It’s suitable for any age, plus it’s a simple, free and convenient exercise that doesn’t require any equipment or special training.

Exercise Can Reduce Blood Pressure And Stress Levels

An Indian study meanwhile discovered that one yoga class and one jogging session a week could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to a report in The Daily Mail.  This study focused on yoga and aerobic exercise and their impact on a person’s blood pressure, body mass index and cholesterol levels.

In the study, 750 patients were evaluated after being diagnosed with CVry heart disease. The study’s participants were divided into three groups: 225 participants who did aerobic exercise, another group with 240 participants doing yoga and thirdly, 285 subjects who were involved with both aerobic exercise and yoga. All of them did their assigned physical activity for 3-6 month sessions.

Their results revealed that those engaging with yoga only or aerobic exercise only, both had lower levels of blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, weight and waist circumference. The other group engaged in both yoga and aerobic exercise and they had twice as many reductions when compared to other groups. Additionally, both groups saw an improvement in the left ventricular ejection fraction, diastolic function and capacity to exercise.

Yoga was chosen for the study as this exercise involves strengthening the body, mind and soul. By concentrating or connecting the mind to the body through deep breathing and poses, this can reduce heart pressure and stress.

Researchers revealed how combining yoga with aerobic exercise can reduce mental, physical and vascular stress in the body, that can lead to decreased cardiovascular mortality and morbidity.

Cardiologists involved in the study suggest that heart disease patients may benefit greatly from learning Indian style yoga and maintaining a regular routine.

The study was presented at the 8th Emirates Cardiac Society Congress in collaboration with the American College of Cardiology Middle East Conference.
