Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal endocrine disorder affecting 1 in 10 women of childbearing age. PCOS occurs with abnormal levels of reproductive hormones. This occurs when there are excess androgens such as testosterone. This plays a role in the proper impact and functioning of the ovaries and metabolism.

Women who suffer with PCOS tend to have insulin resistance. This means that their bodies do not respond to insulin properly, and an excess of insulin production occurs.

Many women search for a natural treatment method for their PCOS symptoms and the insulin resistance. New research is now suggesting that the antioxidant compound Resveratrol may help to manage the hormone imbalances that are characterised by PCOS. Insulin resistance is the pre-cursor to Type 2 Diabetes, a common diagnosis alongside PCOS.

What Are PCOS Symptoms?

There are various symptoms associated with PCOS and they can include:

  • Infertility;
  • Excess hair on the body
  • Irregular menstrual periods
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Thinning hair
  • Skin tags
  • Darkening of the skin
  • Weight gain

PCOS can have an important impact on a woman’s self-esteem and quality of life. While modern treatments vary, for PCOS they often include modifying the diet, surgery and prescription medications to balance hormone levels.

What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is an anti-inflammatory compound that can help to protect plants from disease. Resveratrol also protects plants from fungus or infections, undue stress, injury or ultraviolet irradiation.

The same protective benefits from Resveratrol can be engaged in humans. The latest study is the first of many that assesses resveratrol’s impact on the hormone and metabolic processes of women with PCOS.

Resveratrol Study Results

In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the researchers separated 30 women into two groups:

i) One group supplemented with 1,500 milligrams of Resveratrol for 3 months

ii) The other group supplemented with a placebo pill for 3 months

By taking blood tests at the start and finish of the study, researchers measured levels of testosterone and other male hormones. The women also took a glucose tolerance test. Their insulin resistance and sensitivity were evaluated before and after.

The two groups had the following results:

Resveratrol Group:

Testosterone decreased by 23.1%

DHEAS (a hormone that converts to testosterone) decreased by 22.2%

Placebo Group:

Testosterone increased by 2.9%

DHEAS increased by 10.5%

The women supplementing with Resveratrol saw a 31.8% decrease in fasting insulin levels, along with an increased responsiveness to insulin.

“The study’s findings suggest that Resveratrol can improve the body’s ability to use insulin, lowering the risk of developing diabetes. Resveratrol may also help to reduce the risk of metabolic problems that are commonly found in women with PCOS,” explained the study’s senior author, Dr. Antoni J. Duleba, of the University of California, San Diego. The study suggests that Resveratrol can improve insulin responsiveness in the long-term.

New research published in the Endocrine Society’s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism shows that Resveratrol may manage and support hormone imbalance characterised by PCOS.

Resveratrol is most commonly found in red wine, grapes, raspberries and even peanuts. Choosing to use a supplement combined with Resveratrol may be a better idea. In this way, the Resveratrol is more effectively absorbed into the bloodstream for maximum impact on insulin levels.
