Taking a Ubiquinol supplement may be beneficial for protecting your heart health as you get older, a new study has found.
A research paper published in the journal Aging has shown that taking Ubiquinol supplements promotes a significant increase of total CoQ10 plasma levels after cardiac surgery. It was also shown that ubiquinol prevented against any adverse outcomes associated with heart problems in elderly patients.
What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a nutrient that naturally occurs in the body, but declines with age. It acts as a powerful antioxidant and has many protective benefits. It has been shown to support heart health, by possibly helping to improve and reduce symptoms related to heart failure and lessen cardiac risks. There’s also evidence that taking CoQ10 supplements may potentially lower blood pressure slightly.
What The New Study Shows
In the trial, fifty elderly patients affected by severe aortic stenosis (where an aortic valve becomes diseased) who were undergoing aortic valve replacement were given Ubiquinol and the clinical and biochemical effects were then evaluated. The trial was randomised to give them either a placebo or 400mg daily of Ubiquinol, from seven days before to five days after surgery.
The patients’ plasma and cardiac tissue CoQ10 levels, oxidative status and other underlying biomarkers such as Troponin I (a group of proteins that regulate heart contractions) were assessed. After their assessment, the main cardiac adverse effects, NHYA heart failure class, contractility, and myocardial hypertrophy (secondary endpoints) were evaluated during a six-month follow-up visit.
Treatment with Ubiquinol was found to counteract the post-operative plasma CoQ10 decline (p<0.0001) and oxidation (p=0.038) and curbed the post-operative increase in troponin I (QH, 1.90 [1.47–2.48] ng/dL; placebo, 4.03 [2.45–6.63] ng/dL; p=0.007) related to cardiac surgery.
What this study shows is that taking CoQ10 supplements can support and have protective benefits for the heart health of elderly patients, especially following any type of cardiac surgery.
Ubiquinol is the active form of CoQ10, a fat-soluble antioxidant that can support your body’s natural energy production in every cell and organ of your body. It’s especially beneficial for ensuring optimal function of the heart and lungs.
The body does produce Ubiquinol, however, levels begin to diminish from our thirties onwards. We also only absorb small quantities from our food to get at least 100mg of Ubiquinol daily.
People who have cardiovascular, neurological, liver and diabetes-related conditions may all have suppressed levels of Ubiquinol and require more of this antioxidant that simply can’t be obtained from diet alone.
When we’re deficient in Ubiquinol, our bodies age quicker, our immune system weakens and our energy and stamina levels drop too.
